Before Anesthesia

Before Anesthesia at Oral Surgery +

Proper preparation for anesthesia is essential to ensure both your safety and comfort during oral surgery. At Oral Surgery + of Baton Rouge, we offer clear and thorough guidelines to help you get ready for your procedure and support a smooth, successful outcome.

Pre-Anesthesia Instructions

Medical History Review
  • Inform Your Surgeon: Share a detailed medical history, including any ongoing health conditions, known allergies, and all medications you’re taking—this includes over-the-counter remedies and supplements.
  • Update on Health Changes: Let us know if you’ve experienced any recent illnesses, such as a cold or flu, before your scheduled procedure.
Medications and Supplements
  • Medication Adjustments: Follow all guidance provided by your surgeon regarding medication usage. Some prescriptions may need to be paused or adjusted ahead of surgery.
  • Avoid Blood Thinners: If you’re using blood thinners like aspirin or warfarin, you may be advised to discontinue them a few days prior to your appointment.
Fasting Guidelines
  • No Food or Drink: Do not eat or drink anything—including water—for at least 6 to 8 hours before your procedure. This helps reduce the risk of aspiration during anesthesia.
Alcohol and Smoking
  • Avoid Alcohol: Refrain from consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours before surgery.
  • No Smoking: Avoid smoking for at least 12 hours before your procedure, and ideally for 24 hours afterward. Smoking can negatively affect both anesthesia and your recovery process.
Clothing and Personal Items
  • Comfortable Clothing: Dress in loose-fitting clothes with short sleeves or sleeves that can be rolled up easily.
  • Remove Jewelry: Leave jewelry and valuables at home to prevent interference with the procedure.
  • No Makeup or Nail Polish: On surgery day, avoid using makeup, nail polish, or skin lotions.
Transportation and Support
  • Arrange a Ride: You’ll need a responsible adult to drive you home following your procedure, as you will not be allowed to drive yourself.
  • Post-Op Caregiver: Plan for someone to stay with you for at least 24 hours after surgery to help with your recovery and monitor for any issues.
Preoperative Hygiene
  • Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth thoroughly before arriving, but avoid swallowing any water.
  • Bathing: Take a shower or bath the night before or the morning of surgery to ensure cleanliness and reduce infection risk.
Arrival Time
  • Early Arrival: Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled procedure to complete check-in and any final preparations.

What to Expect on the Day of Surgery

  • Preoperative Check-In: Upon your arrival, you will complete any final paperwork and check in for your procedure.
  • Vital Signs and Preparation: Our staff will take your vital signs and review your medical information once more. You may be asked to change into a surgical gown.
  • Anesthesia Administration: Based on your selected anesthesia type, our trained professionals will administer it to ensure a pain-free and safe experience.

By following these pre-anesthesia steps, you help us deliver the safest, most effective care possible. If you have questions or concerns about getting ready for anesthesia, contact Oral Surgery + of Baton Rouge. We’re here to support you at every stage of your surgical journey.
